Fighting Defeatism

I’ve heard several people that I otherwise respect tell me over the past few months that “Roe v. Wade is settled, we’ve lost that war, we need to work to decrease abortions by other means.”

I think Carl Anderson, head of the Knights of Columbus, said it best when he said, “Don’t tell me ‘Roe’ is settled law. ‘Separate but equal’ was settled law in this country for 90 years, and we changed that!”

The issues surrounding the Freedom of Choice Act (FOCA) have been well-reviewed in this blog over the past few months. President-elect Obama has vowed to sign FOCA if he gets the chance (and actually would like it to be his first act as president). Unfortunately, voters in their anti-Republican rage managed to give the congressional control almost completely over to the Democratic party, which has as a key plank of its platform the enshrinement of abortion (just read the actual first paragraph of their platform statement for proof). And no one is asking the obvious question: if the president-elect really intends to decrease abortions by increasing social support programs, why has he also vowed to dramatically increase access to abortion?

At the core of the election was the revelation that this nation is no longer interested in protecting founding principle of the inalienable right to life. A slim majority has asserted instead that liberty and the pursuit of happiness are more important. It’s up to us to work to convert the majority. This begins by supporting true pro-life candidates, no matter their political party, and keeping up pressure on elected officials. Stay involved, don’t just vote and then be done for 2 or 4 years!
